Just under an hour from Stockholm, Sigtuna offers a charming glimpse into Sweden’s earliest history. Founded around AD 980, it is Sweden’s oldest town and is beautifully situated along the shores of Lake Mälaren. Its well-preserved wooden houses, cobblestone streets, medieval church ruins and numerous runestones create an atmosphere that feels distinctly Swedish and wonderfully removed from the capital.

The heart of the town is Stora Gatan, Sweden’s oldest pedestrian street, lined with small boutiques, cafés and historic buildings. Guests can also explore Stora Torget, home to the country’s smallest town hall, as well as the atmospheric ruins of St. Olof’s and St. Peter’s churches.

Sigtuna Museum offers an excellent introduction to the town’s Viking and medieval heritage, while the surrounding waterfront provides beautiful walking paths and views across Lake Mälaren.

Distance from Sheraton Stockholm: Approximately 45–55 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Getting There: Taxi or private car is the most convenient option. Sigtuna can also be reached by public transport via Märsta, with connections by train and bus from Stockholm. During the summer, boat excursions may also be available from Stockholm.

Opening Hours: Sigtuna itself is open year-round. Individual attractions and shops have seasonal opening hours. Sigtuna Museum: May–September, daily 10:00–16:00; October–April, generally 12:00–16:00, with Mondays closed during parts of the winter season.
