Sigtuna
Just under an hour from Stockholm, Sigtuna offers a charming glimpse into Sweden’s earliest history. Founded around AD 980, it is Sweden’s oldest town and is beautifully situated along the shores of Lake Mälaren. Its well-preserved wooden houses, cobblestone streets, medieval church ruins and numerous runestones create an atmosphere that feels distinctly Swedish and wonderfully removed from the capital.
The heart of the town is Stora Gatan, Sweden’s oldest pedestrian street, lined with small boutiques, cafés and historic buildings. Guests can also explore Stora Torget, home to the country’s smallest town hall, as well as the atmospheric ruins of St. Olof’s and St. Peter’s churches.
Sigtuna Museum offers an excellent introduction to the town’s Viking and medieval heritage, while the surrounding waterfront provides beautiful walking paths and views across Lake Mälaren.
Distance from Sheraton Stockholm: Approximately 45–55 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
Getting There: Taxi or private car is the most convenient option. Sigtuna can also be reached by public transport via Märsta, with connections by train and bus from Stockholm. During the summer, boat excursions may also be available from Stockholm.
Uppsala
Around 45 minutes from Stockholm, Uppsala is one of Sweden’s oldest and most historic cities. Known for its prestigious university, impressive cathedral and royal history, it offers a wonderful mix of culture, architecture and traditional Swedish life.
The city’s main landmark is Uppsala Cathedral, the largest cathedral in the Nordic countries and the final resting place of King Gustav Vasa. Nearby, Gustavianum offers insight into Uppsala’s university and Viking heritage, while Uppsala Castle provides beautiful views over the city and houses the Uppsala Art Museum.
Just outside the city centre, Gamla Uppsala is home to ancient royal burial mounds and an important Viking-era historical site.
For a traditional Swedish fika, Güntherska Hovkonditori is a popular choice, beautifully located along the Fyris River. Ofvandahls, founded in 1878, is another classic café with a historic atmosphere.

Getting There: Uppsala is easily reached by train from Stockholm Central, with the journey taking around 40 minutes. Taxi or private car is also convenient, especially for a full-day excursion.
